Moreno Valley Utility Warns of Scam Targeting Electricity Customers

photo of older couple paying bills.

The City of Moreno Valley has been made aware that residents are being targeted by con artists who are impersonating Moreno Valley Utility (MVU) and Southern California Edison (SCE) staff in an attempt to fraudulently collect payments on late electricity bills.

Residents have been contacted by people pretending to represent MVU or SCE claiming that a payment needs to be made immediately on a late electricity bill, or the power will be turned off.

The caller then directs customers to call 1.800.436.7115 to make a payment.

MVU does not call customers to demand payment for a late bill.

The safety and security of our residents is our top priority and we encourage residents to contact Moreno Valley Utility immediately at 844.341.6469 or SCE at 800.655.4555 if you suspect that you have been the victim of fraud.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from either MVU or SCE, please be cautious about the personal information you share over the phone.

Safety Tips:

  • If you do receive a call, always verify it by calling either the company on the check, the MVU customer service center at 844.341.6469, or the SCE customer service number at 800.655.4555.
  • Be cautious about the personal information you share via email, phone or the Internet.
  • Make sure to shred all bills before throwing them in the trash.
