Moreno Valley Police Department wins award from
California’s Office of Traffic Safety

The California Office of Traffic Safety announced Moreno Valley’s Police Department helped California achieved the highest seat belt use rate in its history--92.5 percent--following the three-week “Click It or Ticket” campaign in May and June of 2005. The Department surpassed all other law enforcement agencies statewide, issuing more than 5,000 citations for seat belt and child safety seat violations.

“I’m incredibly proud of my staff, particularly Traffic Sergeant Dave Fontneau, for going above and beyond in traffic safety excellence,” said Moreno Valley Police Chief, Bill Di Yorio. “In just two years, the Moreno Valley Police Department increased the seat belt use rate from just over 50 percent to more than 90 percent. That takes dedication and effort from everyone on staff,” Di Yorio said.

Traffic personnel receiving awards include: Officer Don Anderson, Officer Chad Craig, Corporal Bob Duckett, Officer Jason Edmondson, Officer Todd Grimm, Officer Shawn Gurganious, Officer Steve Jimenez, Officer Ted Morgan, Officer Sergio Rodriguez and Officer Scott Van Gorder.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is part of a long-term vision to help California achieve the fewest traffic-related fatalities in the nation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately half of all vehicle occupants killed in California did not buckle up. NHTSA estimates that 671 Californians who died in traffic crashes would be alive today had they simply worn a seat belt.

California’s new seat belt use rate of 92.5 percent is significantly higher than the national average of 82 percent, which means 657,000 more vehicle occupants are now buckling up in California than in 2004.
